Ultrasound Scan to Date Pregnancy and Estimate Baby’s Due Date
Dating scans are the most accurate way of establishing your baby’s due date and finding out how many weeks pregnant you are. First View Imaging offers ultrasound scanning to date your pregnancy from 7 weeks gestation.
Early pregnancy dating scans are useful to check that your baby’s heartbeat is developing well, confirm the number of fetuses and accurately predict your baby’s due date. Your baby’s head, limbs, hands and feet can also been seen as well as some organs such as the stomach. Ultrasound dating scans are also useful to check the site of pregnancy, i.e. exclude ectopic pregnancies if you have experienced problems in previous pregnancies. If booking a scan from 16 weeks, it may also be possible to determine the gender of the baby.
When you first become pregnant, your baby’s due date is calculated from the date of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP), however you will actually conceive around 14 days after your LMP or later if your cycle is longer than 28 days. If your cycles are irregular, this can also make it difficult to date your pregnancy – this is why a pregnancy dating scan is essential. Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally accurate within 3-5 days, with the most accurate time being between 8-11 weeks gestation. A pregnancy dating scan is normally performed trans-abdominally, across your tummy; however an internal scan may be required at earlier gestations (i.e. 7 - 8 weeks), as this makes it easier to see the baby. To prepare for the scan, it’s best to attend your appointment with a full bladder.
The accuracy of any ultrasound examination depends on the skill of the sonographer and the quality of the equipment. First View Imaging consists of a team of expert sonographers and our Hampshire based clinic is fully equipped with the latest and most technically advanced ultrasound imaging equipment.
Please note if the scan is inconclusive at a very early stage ie too early to determine viability (less than 6 weeks) or a delayed scan is required to check for determination of ongoing viability, a further charge will apply again at the normal rate of £70. However if any further scans are required this can sometimes be arranged through the NHS after seeing your GP if clinically required.
